Introduction

Within "The Future Okavango" this subproject focuses on the understanding of scale-related interaction betweenland management, climate conditions and hydrological ESF&S and on the development of suitable and robustmethods and tools for integrated assessment of land management options and climate change impactson hydrological ESF&S at local, regional and trans-regional level. This will be achieved by applyinga holistic, interdisciplinary and multi-scale approach based on comprehensive hydrologicalsystem analysis integrating the micro-field scale, the meso-subcatchment scale and the basin scale.

Tasks

  • Task 1 - Comprehensive hydrological system assessment and analysis for ESF&S aiming at a better process oriented understanding of the single components and their interaction of the complex ecosystem of the Okavango basin

  • Task 2 - Delineation of Response Units (RU) as model entities for multi-scale modelling utilizing GIS data bases elaborated during the project in cooperation with other partners

  • Task 3 - Multi-scale hydrological modelling of test basins by means of JAMS/J2000 to provide spatially distributed estimates of hydrological process dynamics and process states

  • Task 4 - Enhancement of the JAMS/J2000 model suite by process based modules in order to reflect specific conditions of the hydrological system of the Okavango basin.

  • Task 5 - Model analysis for land management related ESF&S and "what-if?" scenarios to provide estimates about the impact of changing land management and land use on the water resources

  • Task 6 - Assessment of climate change impacts on hydrological related ESF&S to provide estimates and projections about the impact of climate change on the hydrological conditions and dynamics

  • Task 7 - Capacity development, training, and dissemination to enable regional partners in Angola, Botswana and Namibia to use the software tools elaborated during the project for the development of sustainable management options and for decision support.
